Have you ever heard of Jimmy Winkfield? The last black jockey to win the Kentucky Derby (in 1902) Winkfield led an amazing life that took him to Russia and France where he hobnobbed with royalty. He barely escaped war-torn Europe & came back to America in the 1940s. He took a job at Pete Bostwick's race horse barn in Aiken and lived here for several years before going back to live in France. Racing writer Ed Hotaling chronicles his story in Wink.

Interested in racing? Pick up a copy of one of Cot Campbell's books. Cot owns Dogwood Stable, one of Aiken's most illustrious thoroughbred training stables. His two books, Lightning in a Jar and Rascals & Racehorses are filled with good stories & good advice.

If you want to learn about the history of Aiken in the Golden Days, you really have to have Harry Worcester Smith's classic, Life & Sport in Aiken. Nine hundred and fifty copies of this book were published by the Derrydale Press in 1935. Due to its scarcity & the rise of interest in the Golden Age of American sport, Life & Sport in Aiken has gotten quite pricey. You can try to get it through Amazon, but expect to pay over $400 (ouch!). Or you can contact Robin Bledsoe of Robin Bledsoe Books in Cambridge, MA. Robin specializes in horse books and might be able to help you.
